McKenzie County resident Rex Korslien has announced his candidacy for the McKenzie County Commission, emphasizing a background rooted in agriculture, the energy industry, emergency services and local volunteer leadership.

Korslien is one of three candidates seeking two available commission seats in the June 9 primary election. Incumbent Commissioner Kathy Skarda is seeking reelection while Kerry Thompson is also running for a seat on the board.

In a statement provided to the McKenzie County Farmer, Korslien said his decision to run stems from a desire to help guide the county through future growth while maintaining a focus on local residents and long-term sustainability.

“My name is Rex Korslien, and I have proudly called McKenzie County home since 2006,” Korslien said. “My wife and I were married in 2009, and together we are raising our three children here, all of whom attend school in McKenzie County. This community is home for us, and we have built our lives around faith, family, agriculture, and service.”
Korslien said he was raised on a family farm and currently operates a small ranch north of Watford City alongside his family. He also spent years working in the oilfield and most recently served as a Production Superintendent for Oasis Petroleum.

He said those experiences have given him firsthand knowledge of the balancing act between agriculture, oil and gas development, infrastructure expansion and long-term county planning.
“Because of those experiences, I understand both the opportunities and challenges that come with agriculture, energy development, infrastructure demands, and long-term planning in western North Dakota,” Korslien stated.
