McKenzie County resident Kerry Thompson has announced his candidacy for the McKenzie County Commission, joining a competitive race for two open commission seats in the June 9 primary election.

Thompson will face incumbent Commissioner Kathy Skarda and fellow challenger Rex Korslien in the race. County Commissioner Howdy Lawlar previously announced he would not seek reelection, opening one of the seats on the board.

A longtime resident of the county and veteran of the oilfield service industry, Thompson said his campaign is rooted in a desire to help preserve the quality of life in McKenzie County for future generations.

“I want to help ensure McKenzie County remains a great place to live for generations to come,” Thompson said. “I believe my life experience has prepared me well for this position.”
Thompson said he and his wife are celebrating 30 years of marriage this year. Together they have four children and three grandchildren, with a fourth grandchild expected soon. He said having all of his children and grandchildren living in McKenzie County gives him a strong personal investment in the county’s future.

Thompson has lived in McKenzie County for the past 17 years and has worked in the oilfield service industry for more than 18 years. Before entering the energy sector, he said he spent 12 years as a business manager and later operated his own construction business for eight years.
