Watford City extended its winning streak to four straight games as the Wolves rolled over the Heart River Cougars 33-0.
Watford City scored on its first two possessions as Derek Thompson put the Wolves on the scoreboard with a three-yard run and then Nick Liebel was on the receiving end of a 40-yard pass from Trey Jacobson to put the Wolves on top 14-0 with Kalin Mogen kicking both PATs.
“Our ground game was the key to the win,” stated Fred Fridley, Wolves’ head coach. “We had 233 yards rushing and four touchdowns.”
Brady Lund led the Wolves in rushing as he scored three rushing touchdowns as he piled up 160 yards on 20 carries.
Lund scored two touchdowns in the second quarter on runs of three and four yards to put Watford City on top 26-0 at halftime.
Lund then capped off the Wolves’ scoring in the third quarter as he scrambled into the end zone on a four-yard run. Kalin Mogen kicked the extra PAT to give Watford City the 33-0 win.
“On the defensive side of the ball, we gave up only 41 yards rushing and 30 yards passing,” stated Fridley. “Derek Thompson was a big part of our defensive play as he was in Heart River’s backfield all night making tackles or disrupting their offense, while Cody Fisketjon and Kalin Mogen also had big games from their linebacking spots.”
With the win, Watford City remains in a tie for the top spot in the Class A Region IV with Hazen with both teams holding a 3-0 record.
The Wolves will travel to Hazen this Friday night for a key Region IV matchup. Both teams are 4-0 in season play and both are rated in the top five in the Class A 11-man football polls. Game time is set at 8 p.m. CST.
“The Bison bring a strong running game with Baylen Carr and Brent Sorenson as both are first team All-Staters from last year,” states Fridley. “We need to be at the top of our game and contain their speed to the outside and their power inside. If we are going to have home field advantage in the play-offs, this game will be the deciding factor.”
Game time is set at 8 p.m. CST.
