North Dakota’s oil and gas sectors experienced a steady, positive shift in March, capitalized by a modest production increase, surging market prices, and a record-breaking number of active producing wells. State officials attributed much of the momentum to the fading winter weather and an advantageous global pricing environment. The figures were made public during the North Dakota Department of Mineral Resources (DMR) May 2026 Director’s Cut report. Mark Bohrer, Assistant Director of the Oil and Gas Division, presented the monthly briefing on behalf of Director Nathan Anderson.

McKenzie County Statistics
According to the March 2026 State Summary Report from the North Dakota Department of Mineral Resources, McKenzie County remains the undisputed champion of the state’s energy sector, accounting for nearly a third of North Dakota’s total oil output and nearly half of its natural gas production. In March, Our county boasted 5,796 actively producing wells, the highest in the state, out of a statewide total of 19,639 wells, meaning roughly 29.5 percent of all active state wells are located within McKenzie County borders. This massive infrastructure yielded a preliminary oil production of 11,201,755 barrels (BBLS), commanding 31.6 percent of North Dakota’s total monthly output of 35,424,484 BBLS. The county’s dominance is even more pronounced in gas production; McKenzie County generated a staggering 48,570,790 thousand cubic feet (MCF) of preliminary natural gas, which constitutes a massive 45.1 percent of the statewide total of 107,562,855 MCF.
