McKenzie County’s economy continues to show signs of resilience and long-term growth in 2026, even as several indicators point to slowing activity in portions of the oilfield and construction sectors, according to the latest “Economy at a Glance” report released by McKenzie County Economic Development.
The May 2026 report paints a mixed but generally stable economic picture for western North Dakota’s largest oil-producing county. Employment remains strong, unemployment continues to sit below 3 percent, hotel occupancy is improving, and population-related indicators such as births and school enrollment continue to rise. At the same time, oil production, taxable sales, building permit values, and some tourism indicators have declined compared to previous years.
