Watford City saw its season record drop to 1-2 as the Wolves fell to Lewis & Clark, 37-19, in home football action last Friday. With the loss, the Wolves record in Region action is 1-1.
“It was a game that whenever Lewis & Clark needed a big play, they got it,” stated Fridley. “The Bombers had four or five plays where they were third or fourth and long and converted on a pass play.”
Lewis & Clark put the Wolves in a deep hole early in the contest as the Bombers scored 20 first-quarter points.
Both teams would score a touchdown in the second quarter with Austin Garmann getting the Wolves on the scoreboard on a four-yard run.
Leading 30-6 at the end of the first half, Lewis & Clark would tack on six more points in the third quarter to take a 37-6 lead into the final quarter of play.
“We made too many mistakes in the secondary and gave up some big pass plays,” stated Fred Fridley, Wolves’ head coach, on the loss. “We still need to get better; and in particular, our pass defense and tackling are two areas we need to work on.”
Austin Garmann would score Watford City’s second touchdown of the game in the fourth quarter on a five-yard run before Daniel Marmon would add the final touchdown of the game for Watford City on a three-yard pass from Lucas Nicholson. Steven Bascom kicked the conversions on the final two touchdowns to make the final score 37-19.
“Lucas Nicholson had a nice game again passing the ball as he connected on 11 of 19 attempts for 115 yards,” stated Fridley. “And on defense, Shawn Fulwider, Daniel Marmon and Cory Jones led the way.”
The next action for the Wolves will be on Friday when they travel to Velva for a 7 p.m. game.
“We get Clay Billing, Josh Johnson and Davis Zubke back, which will help us in the backfield and at linebacker,” states Fridley. “Velva is 1-2 on the season and this will be a game where we will see where we could be when playoffs start. They have a very good football team again, but not as good as in the past.”
