Watford City Veterinary Clinic Welcomes New Doctor

There’s a new face at the Watford City Veterinary Clinic, and he’s ready to make sure our four-legged residents get the best care in the Badlands. Dr. Jacob Merkley is already hard at work helping the community’s animals live their healthiest lives.

Originally from Colorado, Dr. Merkley brings a wealth of experience to the area, having spent the last decade in Wyoming earning his bachelor’s and master’s degrees before attending veterinary school at Midwestern University in Arizona. While his transition to the area is still underway, he noted that “Everyone I have met and spoken with has been very kind and welcoming.”

Dr. Merkley was drawn to Watford City by the appeal of a small rural community and a desire for a change of scenery after his time in urban Arizona. His approach to medicine is deeply rooted in the philosophy of “compassionate, individualized patient care,” which he puts into practice by taking the time during every exam to learn about the unique needs of each patient and their owner. Reflecting on his professional philosophy, Dr. Merkley explained, “I do what I would want someone to do with my animals if I was in their.” His veterinary interests are remarkably broad, spanning from exotic pets to the specialized needs of cattle and equine medicine. He particularly enjoys the variety this work provides, noting that “it allows me to have days that are never the same and that’s exciting to me.”

Looking forward, Dr. Merkley is eager to work closely with local ranchers, stating his goal is “gettingto know each producer, their operations, and their unique needs for veterinary care.” He is also working to expand the clinic’s surgical offerings, with plans to bring orthopedic procedures, including fracture repairs and TPLOs, to the community.

Beyond the clinic, Dr. Merkley is an Eagle Scout who values giving back to the community, a commitment he continues through active training with his two Border Collie/Aussie mixes in Search and Rescue (SAR). He is also an avid outdoorsman who looks forward to exploring the “hidden gems” of the local area, including Theodore Roosevelt National Park, alongside his dogs. When he isn’t outdoors or at the clinic, he keeps busy at home with his two snakes and a turtle, as well as his seven siblings spread across the country. The community is encouraged to stop by and offer a warm Watford City welcome to Dr. Merkley as he settles in and begins serving our area’s animal population.
