(Editor’s note: This is the first of a two-part series that explores the essential need of foster care families.)

In honor of National Foster Care Month, it pays to remember that while fostering a child is a temporary arrangement, the impact it can have on their life is everlasting.
“In May, we recognize foster parents, case workers and foster staff who work so diligently to support our children and families in our communities,” says Kelsey Bless, North Dakota Department of Human Services licensing unit administrator.
According to Bless, there are currently 12 foster care families within McKenzie County who are making a positive impact on a child’s life.
“There’s young people today that have aged out of foster care but still remember their first placement,” says Bless.
For some children, it’s eating at the dinner table and experiencing their first taste of love. Other times, it’s learning a new household chore that is age appropriate or something that leads to a newly acquired skill or  maybe even going on vacation or out to a restaurant.”
