A Day in the Mayor’s Shoes: Showcasing the Highlights of Watford City

While most third graders were tackling reading, writing, and arithmetic during City Government Week, Piper Brunett was focused on something a bit more civic-minded: “tough decisions.”
Piper, a student at Fox Hills Elementary, recently spent a day in the life of city leadership after being named the winner of the city’s “Mayor for a Day” essay contest. Out of dozens of candidates from across the district, Piper’s vision for the future of Watford City earned her a seat at the table, and a front-row view of how a community truly functions.

The path to the mayor’s office began in Ms. Albarran’s classroom, where students practiced the art of the persuasive essay. Piper’s winning entry didn’t just list what she liked about her hometown; it offered a thoughtful plan for improvement. “One idea I would share if I were mayor is to build a family fun center,” Piper wrote in her essay. “It could have a bowling alley and an arcade...This would give families a fun place to go during our cold winters.” Beyond entertainment, Piper showed a deep understanding of a mayor’s responsibilities. “He makes really tough decisions,” Piper said of her time observing Mayor Phil Riely. “He makes sure our town is safe. He helps keep the people in Watford City safe with all his decision-making.”
