What a week. Another assassination attempt on President Trump, and right on cue comes the chorus, “political violence is unacceptable”, we need to “tone down” the rhetoric. You can set your watch to it. The statements roll in, and the social media posts pile up. Then, a few days pass and it all fades away like it never happened.
So I have to ask: Does anyone actually mean it anymore?
Because if we did, if we truly believed that political violence is beyond the pale, wouldn’t something change? Wouldn’t there be a lasting shift in how we talk about each other? Instead, the temperature drops briefly, then shoots right back up.
What are we becoming?
Somewhere along the line, hating a president - not just opposing, but hating - became a badge of honor for an angry leftist mob. And let’s be honest, it is not just disagreement anymore. It is dehumanization. It is not enough to say you are wrong, now you have to be evil. Not just misguided, but dangerous. Not just a political opponent, but an enemy.
Civility is so far in the rear view mirror it is barely visible. Everything is framed as a war. We are not in an arena of ideas, we are on a battlefield, and the goal is not persuasion - it is destruction.
