The Watford City boys basketball season came to an end last Monday in Killdeer, in the quarterfinal round of the first-ever Division A Region 4 Tournament.
Watford City began with a hot start, leading 8-2 early on. “I think that our guys went into the tournament locked in, focused and ready to play,” said Watford City Head Coach David Gumke. “We had a good game plan, which helped them feel comfortable in what we were trying to accomplish. We went into the game taking the approach of playing loose and having nothing to lose, but everything to gain. We got off to a great start defensively and offensively, but then ran into trouble in the second quarter with not being able to make shots. We had a lot of good looks, but just couldn’t get them to fall. We handled their press very well, scoring layups when we could and then being patient and running our offense when the layup wasn’t there. This caused them to get out of the press early.”
The Wolves were held scoreless until the final minute of the second quarter, and that hole proved to be too big to dig out of. Watford City would get their shots to fall in the third quarter. They out-scored Shiloh Christian in that period just like they did in the regular season, but once again Shiloh would prevail in this new rivalry.
