Watford City began with a slow start in the Region 4 contest, while Tyson Wick from Hazen, put on an incredible shooting display in his home gym. Wick scored 22 points in the first quarter, including six 3-pointers, to help the Bison build an early 26-5 lead.
“My message after the first quarter was that we can’t let one guy beat us,” said Watford City head coach David Gumke. “We needed to get the ball out of his hands by trapping him like we practiced. We also rotated Carter Breitbach and Sears Wiredu on him with no help responsibilities. Jory Lund also took a turn defending Wick to start the second half. We asked them not to let Wick get the ball and, if he did, the rest of the team would be ready to be in a help position. After his 22 in the first quarter, we allowed him 11 in the second quarter, and then only 11 in the second half.”
