The Watford City Wolves varsity volleyball team is hungry for vengeance. After ending the 2011 season on a sour loss to the Divide County Maroons, the Wolves hope their appetite works in their favor as they meet up against the Maroons for their opening game on Aug. 28 at home.
This year, 37 girls in grades nine through 12 are out for volleyball.
Of that 37, four are returning starters. McKayla Haugeberg is back as a fourth-year starting outside hitter. According to Head Coach Nancy Deutsch, Haugeberg is a very talented defensive player. Middle hitter Jessica Brown returns and is known for her deadly serve. Also returning as an outside hitter is Amanda Mogen, while Tori Hopkins, an athletic setter, concludes the lineup .
“We have a lot of experience returning this year,” stated Deutsch. “We have some very athletic girls this season. I am excited to see what we can put together.”
Deutsch commented on the loss of six valuable seniors from last year - Brianna Allex, Charlie Hystad, Tillie Alveshere, Jennifer Levang, Taylor Sparby and Bessie Schmitz.
“We lost some very athletic, hard-working girls,” stated Deutsch. “But with the large numbers that have come out this season and our returning players, I am confident good things will happen.”
Not only are the Wolves coming back with experience, they have many talented players in the making. There are 30 players out at the Junior High level and 15 out for fifth and sixth grade.
As the Wolves begin to prepare for their first game, Deutsch has been working with different players to see who works best together.
“Katie Mogen is young, but strong,” stated Deutsch. “She is only a ninth grader, but she is a powerful middle hitter and server.”
Filling in the other open varsity positions will be Taylor Dwyer, Tessa Dwyer, Allison Monsen, Cassidy Chapin and Kara Langerud.
“This is who we have at this time,” stated Deutsch. As the season continues and players develop, you never know what could happen.”
Deutsch believes that it takes more than one lineup to win games.
“I am counting on many individuals to step up,” stated Deutsch. “Each and every player fills a vital position.”
 With strength, determination and athleticism on their side, the Wolves are looking to be a threat in the 2012 season.
“We are looking at a year full of possibilities,” stated Deutsch. “These girls are hard workers. Many of them have put in time outside of the season and that is what will make all the difference. This should be a great year.”
