McKenzie County Public School District has officially announced the addition of boys and girls hockey to the Watford City High School (WCHS) athletic department. Beginning with the 26-27 season, the Wolves will take to the ice under the governance of the North Dakota High School Activities Association (NDHSAA) as members of the Western Dakota Association (WDA).

The decision marks a major turning point for the local hockey community. For over 40 years, the McKenzie County Hockey Club (MCHC) has fostered the sport at a club level. Now, that foundation will transition into a sanctioned high school program, replacing the current Junior Gold (boys) and 19U/16U (girls) club programs.

The push for a high school program was driven by the MCHC, which submitted a formal application in the fall of 2025. District officials cited a changing landscape in club hockey, specifically a decline in available teams and competition levels for Junior Gold programs, as a primary motivator. “Hockey has been part of our community for a long time,” said WCHS Activities Director Bradley Foss. “Adding this sport to our high school will increase opportunities for our students while strengthening community connections.” Superintendent Dr. Steve Holen echoed that sentiment, noting that the move aligns with the district’s mission to support student wellbeing. “The goal is to incentivize students to excel in the classroom using skills learned in activities - collaboration, work ethic, resiliency, and leadership,” Holen said.
