Watford City improved to 2-0 as the Wolves opened their home football season with an impressive 35-14 win over the Bismarck Century junior varsity on Saturday.
“We played much better than the first game on both sides of the ball,” stated Wolves’ head coach Fred Fridley. “We had a great week of practice and it showed on Saturday.”
Behind a strong offensive game in the first half, the Wolves scored twice in both the first and second quarters to lead the Patriots, 28-6, at halftime.
Watford City’s ground game was the big difference as the Wolves rolled up 235 yards rushing. The Wolves’ defense bent some, but only allowed one score. Century had problems running the ball and got most of their yards in the passing game.
Bo Cook scored the first touchdown for the Wolves on a 25-yard run, while Brandon Allex added Watford City’s second first quarter score on a 16-yard run. Century closed the quarter scoring a touchdown making it 14-6 after one quarter.
In the second quarter, Bo Cook hit Daniel Marmon on an 80-yard pass for Watford City’s first score of the quarter. Marmon then added his second touchdown of the game on a 17-yard run. Andrew Sampsel connected on both PATs to put the Wolves on top, 28-6, at halftime.
In the third quarter, Brandon Allex would score Watford City’s final touchdown in the game with a 37-yard touchdown run. Sampsel was again good on the PAT, and with neither team scoring in the fourth quarter, the Wolves capped off the big win.
“Our offensive line showed the biggest improvement,” stated Fridley. “Bo Cook had another solid game at quarterback and Brandon Allex and Daniel Marmon ran well.”
Aaron Bigelow, Brandon Allex and Dalton Wright were the defensive leaders.
The next action for Watford City will be at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 13, as the Wolves host Stanley in Watford City’s Homecoming game.
“This will be our region opener and it will be a tough game as Stanley will come in ready,” states Fridley.
