After falling to the Ray Jays in three quick games last Tuesday, the Watford City varsity volleyball team took its game on the road as the Wolves won the consolation championship in the Silver Division at the Dickinson Tournament.
This week, the Wolves will be at home as Watford City hosts Parshall on Thursday and Trinity Christian on Monday.

Watford City struggled with getting its serves into play on Tuesday against Ray. And the Jays took advantage of the Wolves’ miscues as Ray swept Watford City in three quick games by scores of 25-17, 25-22 and 25-22.
McKayla Haugeberg and Jessica Brown led the Wolves with two service aces each, while Haugeberg had nine kills. Taylor Dwyer had 11 digs, while Amanda Mogen had two blocks and Tori Hopkins had 14 assists.

Dickinson Tournament
Watford City advanced to the Silver Division of the Dickinson Tournament by defeating Wolf Point, 3-2, in the opening round of pool play and then falling to Kindred, 0-3, before losing to Billings West, 2-1.
“We played very well, especially in our serving against Wolf Point,” stated Nancy Deutsch, Wolves’ head coach. “Plus our quickness was a real advantage in our opening game.”
The Wolves defeated Wolf Point 25-19, 25-12 and 25-12, but struggled against Kindred in their second game losing by scores of 25-17, 25-9 and 25-13.
“Kindred was a very good team with size and quickness,” stated Deutsch. “We had trouble covering the floor against them.”
In their final match of pool play, the Wolves were defeated by Billings West, 27-26, in the first game and then won the second game, 25-10. In the final game, Billings West defeated the Wolves, 25-17.
“We played a good first set and then won in a close second game,” stated Deutsch. “But they were too much for us at the end.”
In tournament play, after winning the first game over Mandan 25-10, the Braves took the final two games 25-14 and 25-12. The Wolves rebounded from that loss to sweep Beulah by scores of 25-10 and 25-12 to advance to the consolation semifinals against Glendive.
“We came out strong against Mandan winning the first game, but the Braves stepped it up in the final two games,” stated Deutsch. “Against Beulah, we were ready to play and avenged our earlier season loss to the Miners. Beulah had no answer for our team play in the tournament.”
In the consolation championship match, the Wolves took the first game, 25-23, and then lost the second game, 26-24, before coming from behind to win the final game, 25-23.
“All three games against Glendive were very close,” stated Deutsch. “Glendive had trouble returning our serves with McKayla and Tori getting 11 and eight service aces, respectively, in the match.”
During the tournament, McKayla Haugeberg led the team with 29 service aces, 47 kills and 72 digs, while Tori Hopkins had 102 assists and Jessica Brown had 18 blocks.
