Walleye up record to 9-1

Watford City’s American Legion baseball team improved its season record to 9-1 and 6-0 in conference play this past week as the Walleye swept Stanley and Crosby in doubleheader action. They split with Glasgow winning the first game 6-5 and then losing the second game 11-1.
This week, the Walleye will host Crosby on July 1 and Makoti on July 6.
Walleye 27, Stanley 6

Watford City had their bats working as the Walleye scored 48 runs in two games against Stanley on June 18. The Walleye blasted Stanley 27-6 in the first game and then took the second game 21-5.
Douglas Rolfson earned the win in the first game striking out four batters with Nick Liebel pitching the Walleye to the win in the second game striking out 11 batters.
In the first game, Watford City jumped out to a 6-0 first inning lead before scoring 21 runs in the third inning.
Doug Nordby had a grand slam to cap off the Walleye’s win.
In the second game, Watford City’s bats continued hot as the Walleye scored 21 runs on 19 hits. Ben Haugeberg belted out a two run homer for Watford City.

The Walleye split with Glasgow on June 21 taking the first game 6-5 and then losing the second game 11-1.
“Overall we did a good job of competing, especially in the first game,” stated Pat Spacher, Walleye head coach. “Our pitching was excellent for the most part as Ben, Trey and Nick all threw really well”
In the first game, the Walleye held a 3-2 lead after the first inning and were tied 5-5 after five innings of play.
Nick Liebel scored the winning run for Watford City in the sixth inning.
“We were opportunistic at the plate in the first game and really made their pitchers work hard to get us out,” stated Spacher. “In the second game, we played people in different positions and made a lot of errors early that cost us.”

The Walleye bounced back from their first loss of the season sweeping Crosby 15-8 and 10-2 on June 25.
“The kids did a great job of coming back in the first game,” stated Spacher. “Rolfson and Haugeberg pitched extremely well and we had several clutch at bats.”
Doug Rolfson earned the win on the mound in the first game for the Walleye striking out seven batters, while Ben Haugeberg picked up the win in the second game striking out seven batters.
In the first game, Crosby led 8-3 after the fourth inning but the Walleye came back to score seven runs in the eighth inning to take the win.
In the second game, Watford City again found itself trailing Crosby 2-1 after the first inning. But once again, the Walleye would rally scoring four runs in the each of the third and fourth innings to take the win.
