No. 3 Watford City played their first game since December 22, and lost to No. 1 South Prairie-Max 68-45 last Friday afternoon. For the second time this year, the Wolves played against the top-ranked team in Division A Girls Basketball in a non-Region contest, but they were unable to replicate the success they had against Turtle Mountain. South Prairie-Max used a balanced scoring attack and relentless defense to keep the Wolves on their heels for much of the game. Three different Royals scored 14 points each.
“I don’t think the time in between games contributed to our slow start,” said Watford City head coach, Tom Dwyer. “There are definitely some correctable mistakes we made. We didn’t do a good enough job of pass fakes. We telegraphed passes or simply just didn’t see the defense. But South Prairie is very talented and they did a great job with their zone defense. They are tall and lanky and did a great job closing down gaps with their quickness and speed.”
