The Watford City girls fast pitch softball team opened its season last Thursday with the Wolves dropping a pair of games to Stanley 4-2 and 11-3.
“We had a few veteran players missing for our first game, which in a way, was both good and bad for us,” stated Devin Langerud, girls’ head coach. “It was bad from the standpoint that we didn’t field a full team. But on the good side, it gave a lot of our younger or inexperienced players  a chance to show me what they can do in the game situation. And many stepped up, which was great to see.”
According to Langerud, he has 26 girls out for softball this season, which is an increase from the 18 players last season.
“Although 26 players is a lot for just one team, I’m happy,” states Langerud. “I’d rather have the problem of having too many than not enough.”
Now the only problem that Langerud and the Wolves have is playing games under less than ideal conditions.
“All our games are scheduled and we are looking forward to see how we match up with other teams across the state,” states Langerud. “That is, if weather isn’t an issue.”
The next scheduled action for the softball team is on April 18 and 19 in Grafton before hosting Central McLean on April 22.
