Watford City put on a lot of miles last week as they hit the road for three Region 4 games. After a Tuesday night close loss to Hazen, the Wolves bounced back for big wins on Friday at Beulah and Saturday at Standing Rock

No. 4 Hazen 47,
Watford City 43

After a brief Hazen lead in the opening minute, Watford City led for almost the entire first half. “We had some good stretches on both sides of the ball to start the game,” said Watford City head coach, Tom Dwyer. “But we need to do that more consistently throughout the whole game. Offensively, we had too many possessions that either ended in a turnover or we took a poor shot. Our team is always at its best when we continue to stress the defense with good ball movement. Our team will be hard to beat when we start priding ourselves in assists, not points. On defense, we need to remember our assignments and how we want to defend certain players and situations.”

Watford City led by as many as seven points in the first quarter and as many as nine in the second quarter. Hazen ended the half on a 9-1 run that got them within one point at halftime. Hazen tied the score twice in the third quarter, but never took the lead. A similar pattern played out for most of the fourth quarter with the Wolves leading by as many as five. Hazen would play their best basketball at the very end, concluding the game with a 9-0 run thanks in large part to their junior, Macey Van Inwagen. “Hazen is just very scrappy,” said Coach Dwyer. “They get defensive stops when they need them. They get loose balls, offensive rebounds, and make big shots when they need them. Lauren Doll and Macey Van Inwagen are clutch players.” The win extended Hazen’s winning streak to 10 games in a row and they remain undefeated in Region 4.
