A talented group of our very own high school rodeo stars headed to Rock Springs, Wyoming last weekend to compete in the prestigious National High School Finals Rodeo (NHSFR). Kicking off on Sunday, July 13 and running through July 19, this event brings together over 1,700 top student-athletes from 43 U.S. states, as well as Canada, Mexico, Australia, and New Zealand. McKenzie County will be well-represented across a variety of events, with some familiar names leading the charge.

The Sorenson Family:
A Rodeo Dynasty in the Making

The Sorenson household in McKenzie County is full of talent. This year, two more of their rising stars are headed to Nationals, following in the footsteps of their older brother, Tel.

Kally Sorenson, at 17, is truly an all-around force. She’s not just competing in one or two events; she’s headed to nationals as the Champion Barrel Racer, Champion Breakaway Roper, Champion Team Roper Header, and the ultimate prize: the All-Around Cowgirl. Kally has been competing since she was four years old, starting at the Lil Wrangler Series in Watford City. Kally isn’t just excited, she’s a proud hometown competitor, stating, “I feel proud to represent McKenzie County at the Finals.”

Her preparation is intense. “A lot of work and time goes into preparing for any rodeo,” Kally explained. “I obviously have my daily routines of riding my horses to keep them fit and in shape. I also rope on my breakaway horses one time a day. I try to team rope 3-4 times a week.” She credits her success to being “coachable” and embracing change. “It is important to listen and find people who are in your corner and want you to succeed.” While she’s competing in many events, winning the Breakaway Championship this year was particularly special, especially since she trained her horse, Frank. She also cherishes winning the Barrel Racing title for the third consecutive year, and celebrates her Team Roping victory with partner Blu Miller, who she’s been roping with since 8th grade. Her ultimate goal? “Winning!” at Nationals, and eventually, to do pro rodeo.
