Cross Country teams compete

Watford City’s girls varsity cross country team took first place, while the boys team took fourth place in the JV division at the Minot Invitational last Thursday,
Kade Ross led the girls team with a fourth place finish with a time of 17.36 while Kristen Stenehjem placed 11th in a time of 17.58.
In the boys division, Dillon Smith took 28th with a time of 21.06, while Logan Gumke finished in 30th place with a time of 21.08.
“After taking two weeks for practice, the athletes were tired for the meet on Thursday,” stated Greg Brown, Wolves’ head coach. “We have been working hard at increasing our mileage and working on our speed. We have now passed the halfway point of our season and are in a difficult race week with four races close together.”
Other varsity girls placing at Minot were Tara Loomer, 15th, 18:14; Bessie Schmitz, 20th, 18:26; Kara Wold, 21st, 18:32; Hollie Griggs, 19:47; and Sarah Newton, 29:20.
Other varsity boys placing were  Dustin Kleppen, 31st, 21:10; John Meuchel, 50th, 22:52; Reid Brown, 65th, 24:12; and Colt Nicholson, 68th, 26:21.
“Our season is coming to a quick close as our Region Meet is coming up in two weeks and the State Meet is two weeks after that,” states Brown. “In training, we will be running less miles, but will run them with more intensity.”
In the junior high boys division at Minot, James Devers had a time of 15:05, while in the girls division, Addison Sundeen took eighth with a time of 13:30 and Lea Arndt                     was 20th with a time of 13:45.
The next meet for the Wolves will be on Sept. 20 when they run in Williston.
