Birnt Hills Overlook and Trail Gets Makeover

The historic location east of Tobacco Gardens off of Sand Creek Road received some volunteer TLC over the weekend of May 30 and 31.
Fifty fence posts were replaced around the parking area and trail head and the trail itself received rehabilitation with reworking of the surface, drainage, removal of brush and tree trimming listed as work done.
Volunteers through the Badlands Conservation Corps AmeriCorps field crew performed the work. The crew includes members of the Badlands Conservation Alliance, Maah Daah Hey Trail Association, and US Forest Service.
The Birnt Hills Overlook area provides a scenic view that is elevated over rugged badlands terrain along the south rim of the Missouri River Valley that is also home to Lake Sakakawea.
