Maurita R. Aubrey

Maurita Renee Aubrey, 53, of Alexander, N.D. (formerly of Jefferson, Iowa,) passed away peacefully on Dec. 30, 2023 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa, holding the hands of her children after a long-fought battle of cancer.
Maurita was born to Lloyd Dahl & Gail (Pat) Dahl on Aug. 26, 1970, in Williston, N.D. She was the completion of her family as the younger sister to Denise and Shawn. She attended grade school to high school in Williston, N.D., graduating with honors. She furthered her education in undergrad and grad school at Minot State University, in Minot, N.D., also graduating with honors and a degree in education.
Maurita was married on Aug. 4, 1995. In 1997 the couple moved to Jefferson, Iowa, where she started her employment at Prairie Lakes AEA. Starting in the year 2000, Maurita became the mother of daughter, Jordan Nicole Aubrey, and two years thereafter, son, Colton Jacob Aubrey was born. Following the end of the marriage, Maurita continued raising her children and continued her career at Prairie Lakes AEA as a school psychologist, covering over ten school districts. She had a passion for the mind and for children. In her 25 years at the AEA she also worked in the literacy department, assessment and data, as well as administration. In 2009 she got her principal license and was a private school principal for three years at Community Christian Schools in Ft. Dodge, Iowa.
In Sept. of 2013, she was diagnosed with stage 4 metastasis breast cancer. During this 10-year-long battle, Maurita was very courageous, humble, and determined. She had a positive outlook, lived in the present and did not let cancer stop her from living her life. In her free time, aside of treatment and work, she enjoyed reading and going on walks with her dog. She spent time reading her Bible, and listening to her all-time favorite, Bon Jovi. She loved to be with her children and family. The past four months, Maurita spent time with her first grandchild, Blaze. Family and friends described Maurita as intelligent, humorous, witty, very humble, and kind. She was an animal lover.
In the year of 2022, her career at the AEA came to an end, and she decided to move back home to North Dakota with her son, Colton. They lived in the country where she enjoyed the quiet time and the wildlife in her yard. She enjoyed attending her great nieces and nephews’ activities. For her career, she went back to her roots as a school psychologist for WilMac Special Education Center out of Williston, N.D.
Maurita is survived by her daughter, Jordan Aubrey (Cole Stetzel) and grandson, Blaze of Dallas Center, Iowa; son, Colton Aubrey; of Alexander, N.D.; mother, Pat Dahl of Mitchell, S.D.; sister, Denise (Craig) Wahlstrom of Alexander, N.D.; brother Shawn, (Cindy) Dahl of Berthoud, Colo.; nephews, Cameron (Lacy) Wahlstrom, Sheldon (Jenna) Wahlstrom of Alexander, N.D., Tim Dahl of Trenton, Ill., and Mathew Dahl of Camp Humphrey, South Korea; she is also survived by her great-niece and nephews, Reese, Porter and Axel Wahlstrom.
Maurita is proceeding in death by her father, Lloyd Dahl; nephew, Jamison Wahlstrom; as well as other grandparents aunts and uncles.
A Funeral Mass for Maurita was held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 6, 2024 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Jefferson with Fr. Bill Schrieber officiating. Interment will take place at a later date at Camp Creek Cemetery in Alexander, N.D.
A Rosary Prayer service was held at 4 p.m. Friday, Jan. 5, 2024, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, followed by a time of sharing and the family greeting friends until 8 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Love and Legacy Foundation.
