Irene Sanders

Irene Sanders, 96, of Oakes, N.D., died Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2013, at the Good Samaritan Society, Oakes.
Irene Henrietta Bork was born Feb. 9, 1917, at Edgeley, N.D., to Gust and Emma (Beglau) Bork. On April 9, 1917, she was baptized into the Lutheran faith in a country church near Edgeley, N.D., and she was confirmed on March 25, 1934.  She attended LaMoure Country Grade School, and graduated from Edgeley High School in 1934.  She attended North Dakota State University, graduating in 1938 with a B.S. Degree in Home Economics Education. Irene taught for two years in Watford City, N.D., and one year in Bismarck, N.D., prior to her marriage. She also spent eight summers at Camp Grassick at Dawson, N.D.
Irene was married to Fay Merrill Sanders of Leeds, N.D., on June 22, 1941, in Edgeley, N.D.  The couple moved to Crookston, Minn,, where Fay was employed as a pharmacist.
In March of 1942, Fay was called into active duty in World War II, serving in the Army. Irene was able to remain with him while he served in the United States. While at Camp White, Ore., she served as a dietitian for several months at the base hospital.  Then, while her husband was serving overseas, she taught home economics in Edgeley until his return. Upon Fay’s return from duty overseas, they bought the Rexall Drug in Oakes in April 1946 and operated it for 31 years. They continued to make their home in Oakes after Fay’s retirement in 1977.
Irene was a member of the Grace Lutheran Church taking an active part in the various associated activities of the Church. She served as chairman of her circle, president of the general aid, and she taught the Bethel Bible Course. She was a long time member of the Women’s Study Club, the Merry Mixers Homemakers Club, Chapter O of P.E.O., and the American Legion Auxiliary.
She is survived by one daughter, Dr. Carol (Darrell) Tuntland, Huntington Beach, Calif.; two sons, Richard Sanders, Prescott, Wisc., Robert Sanders, Bluemont, Va.; two grandchildren, Todd (Selena) Tuntland, Los Angeles, Calif., and Sonya (Marc) Rayner, Huntington Beach, Calif.; three great-grandchildren, Jack Rayner, Odin Tuntland, and Kai Tuntland; three sisters, Isabelle Bork, Oakes, N.D., Marian Raub, Rutland, Vt., and Dorothy Anderson, Aberdeen, S.D.; one brother, Melvin (Dorothy) Bork, Moorhead, Minn.; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Fay M. Sanders, one brother, Ervin Bork, and a daughter, Holly.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, September 6, 2013, at 10:30 a.m. at Grace Lutheran Church, Oakes, N.D., with lunch to follow.  She has been interred next to her husband and daughter, Holly in Mount Hope Cemetery, Edgeley.
