Daniel Wold

Daniel August Wold died August 16, 2018, at Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls, S.D.
Daniel, son of Omar and Jean (Mogen) Wold was born August 30, 1966 at Watford City, N.D. He was baptized and confirmed at First Lutheran Church in Watford City, graduating from Watford City High School in 1985. While in school, Dan was active in sports and vocal music and received many awards, but was especially honored to play in the North Dakota Shrine Football game and received an Honor Choir Award his senior year. He received his B.S. Ed in Social Science with an English minor from Dickinson State University in 1990.  n the fall of 1990, he moved to Ellendale, N.D., where he began his teaching and coaching career.
In 1991, Dan married Cheryl Helmer in Zion Lutheran Church at Andover, S.D. The couple was blessed with the birth of their daughter, Julia in 1993 and their son, Jordan in 1996. Dan and Cheryl served as foster parents for several children in the early years of their marriage. Dan received his M.S. Ed. in School Counseling from Northern State University in December 1996. In 1998, they moved to Carrington, N.D., where he worked as a high school counselor and continued to coach. In 2013 the family moved to Aberdeen where he worked at Aberdeen Central High School and Northeastern Mental Health. For the past four years, Dan was the counselor at Roncalli High School.
Dan was a talented writer and spent many years writing a column for a local newspaper. He was working on compiling his articles into a book. Dan was known for his humor and quick wit. He was a life-long Vikings fan and always attended NSU sporting events. Dan had a strong need for affiliation and faithfully followed the activities of the Watford City Wolves, Ellendale Cardinals, Carrington Cardinals, Aberdeen Golden Eagles and the Roncalli Cavaliers. In the summers, he loved participating in physical sports such as running, golf, swimming and biking. He trained for and accomplished the Fargo Half Marathon. Dan was pleased to be a friend of Bill for over 29 years. Dan enjoyed spending time with his family and especially enjoyed traveling to Disney World and Disneyland with them. Dan was very proud of his daughter and son for following their dreams. He looked forward to watching them take their next step in life.
Dan was diagnosed with a particularly challenging cancer because it required learning to talk and breathe in a new way. Dan faced these challenges with strength, grace and dignity. His positive attitude was an inspiration.
Dan was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church.
Grateful for having shared Dan’s life are his wife, Cheryl; daughter, Julia Wold of Manchester, Conn.; son, Jordan Wold of Los Angeles, Calif.; mother, Jean Wold of Watford City, N.D.; three brothers, Brian (Darci) Wold of Aurora, Colo., Bruce (Gail) Wold of Pelican Rapids, Minn., and Jay (Roza) Wold of Minot, N.D.; brother-in-law, David (Denise) Johnson of Gold Canyon, Ariz.; mother-in-law, LaVonne Helmer of Groton, S.D., father-in-law, Richard Helmer of Groton, S.D.; brother and sister-in-laws, Deborah (Robert) Utecht of Naperville, Ill., Pamela (Bruce) Merkel of Andover, S.D., and Rich (Dee) Helmer of Geneva, Ill.; and Baxter, the family dog. Aunts and uncles, nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and cousins also survive Dan.
He was preceded in death by his father, Omar; sister, Karen Johnson; maternal and paternal grandparents; and special aunt, Christine.
A memorial service for Daniel was held Monday, Aug. 20, 2018, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Aberdeen. Rev. Samuel Bobby and Rev. Josiah J. Fitch officiated.
Interment was in Andover, SD Cemetery.
