WATFORD CITY, N.D. - Watford City High School is expanding its athletics lineup with the addition of boys and girls hockey, set to begin competition during the 2026–27 school year.

The new programs will compete under the Western Dakota Association and be sanctioned by the North Dakota High School Activities Association, marking a significant milestone for winter sports in the community.

“We’re excited to bring boys and girls hockey to Watford City High School,” said Activities Director Bradley Foss. “Hockey has long been part of our community, and this addition will create new opportunities for students while strengthening ties between the school and the community.”

School officials say the move comes in response to growing local interest in hockey and reflects the district’s broader effort to expand extracurricular opportunities that support student engagement and well-being.

Superintendent Dr. Steve Holen said the addition aligns with McKenzie County Public School District No. 1’s commitment to offering diverse activities for students.

“Adding high school hockey reflects both strong student interest and long-standing community support for the sport,” Holen said. “We’re proud to offer more opportunities for students to get involved, build connections, and represent Watford City in new ways.”

Planning for the new hockey programs is underway, with details on coaching staff, schedules, and program development expected to be released closer to the 2026–27 season.
