State approves $4 billion Bison Generation Station

MCF Newsroom Reports

State regulators on Thursday gave final approval for what will be the largest power plant in North Dakota once built.
The Public Service Commission unanimously approved Basin Electric Power Cooperative’s plans to construct the Bison Generation Station, a $4 billion natural gas-fueled facility in Williams County. The 1,470-megawatt plant will be located between Epping and Ray and is expected to be fully operational by 2030.

The plant aims to address two pressing regional energy issues: electricity shortages and limited natural gas takeaway capacity in the oil-rich Bakken region.

“Having resources like this come online is critically important,” said Commissioner Jill Kringstad. “This project meets the growing need for power in northwest North Dakota driven by traditional oil and gas development and residential demand.”
The Bison station will provide a massive baseload power source to a region where rapid oil development and population growth have outpaced local energy infrastructure.
