Safety and semis - McKenzie County Chairman Lawlar talks Highway 85 expansion

The rhythm of life in the Bakken carries the never ending hum of big trucks and 18-wheelers against the backdrop of fluctuating crude oil prices. Now the score for that composition is changing, with the long-awaited expansion of Highway 85.


For those who live and work in western North Dakota, the road isn’t just a way to get from point A to point B - it’s a vital piece of infrastructure. Perhaps no stretch of pavement in the region is more critical, or more historically concerning, than Highway 85.


I recently sat down with Howdy Lawlar, the Chairman of the McKenzie County Board of Commissioners, on KTGO Radio The Flag (AM1090) to discuss the long-awaited expansion of this corridor. Lawlar has seen the discussions evolve from pipe dreams into construction zones, and he’s particularly energized about the current phase of the project.
