“Overall production is pretty stable,” North Dakota Department of Mineral Resources (NDDMR) officials report, as the state navigates fluctuating global prices and a tightening energy market. North Dakota’s energy sector began 2026 with a display of consistency, weathering winter chills and international instability to maintain its position as a global energy hub. In the March 2026 Director’s Cut report released last Thursday, the DMR painted a picture of a “steady” industry that is leaning into technological efficiency while keeping a watchful eye on escalating conflicts in the Middle East.

Despite the typical challenges of a North Dakota winter, January production figures showed only a nominal dip from the previous month. The state produced 34,867,744 barrels of oil in January, an average of 1.124 million barrels per day. This represents a mere 0.12 percent change from December’s output. The DMR reported that “overall production is pretty stable from December to January.” This stability extends to the natural gas sector as well, which saw a slight 0.72 percent shift, holding steady at approximately 3.322 billion cubic feet (BCF) per day.
