The North Dakota Department of Mineral Resources issued its October 2025 Director’s Cut report last week, featuring August 2025 production data. According to the report, North Dakota’s oil and gas sector demonstrated resilience in August 2025, with crude production holding 3 percent above the state’s revenue forecast despite a slight monthly decline and ongoing price volatility that has led some operators to halt production.

McKenzie County Statistics
The report, presented by Director Nathan Anderson, underscored the unmatched contribution of McKenzie County, which solidified its position as the state’s energy epicenter. With an Adjusted Oil Production of 11,579,572 barrels in August, McKenzie County single-handedly accounted for over 31 percent of North Dakota’s total state production of 35.76 million barrels. The county’s dominance is even more pronounced in gas production, contributing 49,293,402 MCF of gas, a figure nearly double that of the next highest county, Williams. This massive contribution from McKenzie County is the primary reason the top five producing counties together generate 96.2 percent of all North Dakota oil, maintaining the Bakken’s resilience even as price volatility prompts production curtailment elsewhere in the basin.
