Eighth grade is a unique crossroads for students, when a teenager’s understanding of the world begins to expand beyond their own backyard. At Watford City Middle School, helping students navigate that transition falls to (among many devoted teachers) Marshall Krebs; and he uses the vast tapestry of human history and civics to do it. His ability to turn historical events into active, critical discussions has earned him the title of McKenzie County Public School District #1 Teacher of the Year.
According to a recent release, the selection of Krebs, who has spent the last 12 years teaching in the district, comes at the end of a highly competitive, community-driven selection process. This year, the district’s call for nominations generated an unprecedented level of local engagement: a staggering 347 individual nominations were submitted by students, parents, community members, and colleagues, highlighting 86 different staff members across the region. From that deep pool of talent, one educator from each of the district’s four school buildings was chosen as a finalist. A district committee ultimately selected Krebs from the final four.
