For 17-year-old Salil Shoemaker, a sophomore at Watford City High School, the road to national recognition has been paved with determination. Shoemaker has been invited to the prestigious USA Softball High Performance Program (HPP) National Selection Event in Vero Beach, Florida in early December; an honor that serves as a direct pipeline to the U.S. Women’s National Team.
Shoemaker’s journey has been all about overcoming challenges and focusing relentlessly on a singular goal: earning a college scholarship. This invitation, received shortly after she won a national championship with one of her club teams in Fargo, is not just an achievement but a critical step toward fulfilling her future.
“When I first found out, my mom was very excited to tell me the news, and I was very proud that the work I have been putting in [is] having a positive outcome,” Salil shared. While the excitement was immediate, she admitted the scale of the opportunity quickly brought on nerves. “I’m scared but very thankful for the opportunity.” The USA Softball HPP is a “national selection event” where the best players from every state gather to perform and showcase their skills. For Salil, a naturally “shy and quiet person,” she believes her performance on the field is what truly allows her to stand out.
