For most high school seniors, balancing schoolwork and a social life is a full-time job. For Watford City High School senior Kyra Delgado, the job description recently expanded to include leading 1,200 of her peers from across North Dakota at the State Student Council convention. Delgado, the daughter of David Delgado and Stephanie Hanson, represented WCHS as a State Representative, a role she earned after winning a high-stakes election in front of 1,400 people. Her performance at the convention not only ensured a successful event but also earned her the prestigious ‘Outstanding Leader’ award.

Delgado’s journey to the state stage was fueled by a platform she calls “Glow with Kindness.” Crafting a neon-themed campaign booth and a powerful video, she advocated for peer-to-peer mentoring through the “Buddy Program.” The program pairs high schoolers with elementary students who may be struggling academically or personally. “I have seen significant results within this opportunity and wish for other schools to do the same,” Delgado said. Her message resonated deeply; she noted that the most rewarding part of the conference was hearing from students who were inspired to start similar programs in their own districts.

During the conference, Delgado’s primary mission was keeping the energy high and the 1,200 attendees engaged. “One of my main responsibilities was to ensure students are having fun–keeping the kids in their seats enjoying the conference and engaging the crowd,” Delgado explained. However, leading a group of that size presented logistical hurdles, including the challenge of managing peers her own age. Despite the pressure, she found the experience incredibly rewarding. “The kids are so well behaved and ready to learn. They had so many ideas we can bring back to our own Student Council to make our school better.”
