Editorial: What is happening to us?

I am writing this on the one-year anniversary of the second assassination attempt on President Trump’s life at a golf course in Palm Beach Florida, while much of the country continues to grieve the murder of another political figure.
All this coming at a time when the nation is still shaken by the video of a woman murdered in early September on a Charlotte area commuter train by a deranged man who had been arrested and released 14 times.
Good grief, what a year it’s been.
What a month it’s been, and we’re only halfway through.
The Charlotte incident is its own brand of unthinkability, one that will have to be dissected in a larger conversation of mental health and incarceration topics. But before I move on, let me be very clear that 23-year-old Iryna Zarutska being stabbed in the neck from behind is no less tragic than anyone else who died senselessly.
