County GIS Department Launches New Initiative

A recent sit down with the county’s mapping department was a very informative one and something that residents, businesses, ranchers, farmers, and well, anyone that does anything here can find benefit from.
Concerned about floodplain? There’s a map for that. Curious which fire district your home is in? Mapped. Road vehicle weight restrictions? Listed. Parcel data for tax purposes or property ownership? Click here.
In a world of increasing technology, mapping has evolved and continues to do so in ways that benefit every single facet one can think of when it comes to maps.

Elevation, contours, topography, roads, property ownership, city limits, public lands boundaries, updated aerial imagery every two years, above and beyond what Google is even doing these days, and even a virtual tour of the county as if you’re flying over these beautiful lands we have. It is all available thanks to the investment, attention to detail, and expertise that exists within the county’s GIS department.

What is GIS?
According to arcGIS.com, a main company in this realm of technology and information, GIS is a technology that is used to create, manage, analyze, and map all types of data. GIS is short for Geographic Information System.
GIS connects data to a map, integrating location data (where things are) with all types of descriptive information (what things are like there). This provides a foundation for mapping and analysis that is used in science and almost every industry. GIS helps users understand patterns, relationships, and geographic context. The benefits include improved communication, efficiency, management, and decision-making.
