Doug Burgum’s presidential campaign is off and running. Or more correctly, off and flying. Burgum went straight from a campaign kickoff announcement in Fargo directly to campaign stops in Iowa and New Hampshire, the first two states in the Republican primary process.
Burgum will maintain full control of his governorship during the campaign, which could take him all the way to November of 2024, but first he must navigate a daunting primary process to best former president Donald Trump, party darling Ron DeSantis, and at least 10 other candidates.
Burgum announced his campaign in front of a crowd estimated at 850 people at the Sanctuary Events Center in Fargo, repeating multiple times the themes of small-town common sense and the need for a business leader in the White House. He brought his current governorship to the discussion, talking about how the state government cut $1.7 billion in spending his first year in office, while eliminating red tape and streamlining services.
“The economy needs to be the absolute top priority. Every small business owner and every family in our country is feeling the corrosive hidden tax on their lives driven by the Biden-induced inflation. Inflation is the worst; it hurts those the most who can afford it the least…The Biden Administration is obsessed with creating mountains of red tape…Let’s get back to common sense, let’s eliminate red tape, get inflation under control, cut taxes, reduce the cost of living, and help every American realize their fullest potential.”
