When social studies teacher Eric Krogen stood inside the stately chambers of the North Dakota State Capitol earlier this month, he wasn’t just looking at the architecture, but rather at the peers surrounding him. Honored by the North Dakota Department of Public Instruction with the prestigious Excellence in Social Studies Teaching Award, Krogen found himself surrounded by the state’s finest educators and newly nationally certified teachers.

For Krogen, an anchor of Watford City High School (WCHS) for the past 17 years, bringing this statewide honor back to the community is a shared victory: “It means a lot to me to bring this honor home to Watford City,” Krogen shared following the ceremony. “It is not only a reflection on me, but on all of Watford City High School and all of our schools in McKenzie County Public School District #1 because of our excellent teachers, staff, and administrators who work to provide the best education possible.”

Now finishing his 24th year in the classroom, Krogen’s educational footprint spans across North Dakota. A native of Bottineau and a 2002 graduate of Minot State University with a double major in History and Social Science Education, Krogen began his teaching career at Bisbee-Egeland Public School before moving to TGU-Granville, and eventually finding his professional home in Watford City in 2009.
