Basin Electric, NextEra Plan 1,450-MW Gas Plant

MCF Newsroom Reports
Basin Electric Power Cooperative and NextEra Energy Resources, LLC signed a memorandum of understanding this week to explore building a 1,450-megawatt combined-cycle natural gas plant in Basin’s North Dakota service area.
The proposed facility, to be developed under Basin Electric’s Large Load Commercial Program, would support a multi-gigawatt data-center campus. The companies submitted an application in October to the Southwest Power Pool Expedited Resource Adequacy Study to evaluate interconnection and transmission needs, a crucial step toward making the project a reality.
If built, the River Run Energy Center would meet demand from large-scale technology infrastructure while aiming to minimize rate impacts for existing cooperative members. Officials said the project could bring “significant job opportunities” and “substantial tax revenue” to local communities.
