Basin Electric Power Cooperative celebrated the commissioning of its Pioneer Generation Station Phase IV last Wednesday, marking the culmination of the largest single-site power generation project built in North Dakota in more than four decades.

The 580-megawatt natural gas-fueled expansion, located northwest of Williston, was completed just 25 months after its ground-breaking. The project added more than 500 megawatts of reliable, dispatchable energy to the region’s power grid, capable of serving 500,000 homes.

Construction was finished on time and $10 million under budget, with workers logging more than 1.6 million labor hours and maintaining a strong safety record. The facility combines combustion turbines and reciprocating engine units, providing the flexibility needed to meet fluctuating energy demands while supporting long-term grid stability.
