McKenzie County Commissioner Kathy Skarda delivered a compelling appeal during the Oct. 7, Board of Commissioners meeting, urging all local county agencies to prioritize purchasing goods from local businesses instead of relying on national online retailers. Her commentary, which included a pointed reference to the county’s significant spending with a major online giant, underscored a call to strengthen the local economy.
“We all want and need to support our local businesses,” Skarda stated, explaining that simple office and maintenance supplies - from batteries and push pins to highlighters and even toilet paper - should be sourced locally. Commissioner Skarda presented concrete data to illustrate the scope of the county’s reliance on non-local vendors. She revealed that “To date, through the end of September, the county has literally paid $62,300 to Amazon.” She stressed the need to shift this spending back into the community, arguing, “Amazon does not pay us, does not pay you.”
