“It’s so exciting, I’m getting chills.” These words were uttered by a grateful Marie Collins, Director of the Family Crisis Center, upon a unanimous show of support by the McKenzie County Board of Commissioners at their meeting on June 17.
The Commissioners agreed to provide crucial funding to purchase the new Family Crisis Shelter location in Watford City. This decision marks a significant step toward offering immediate, local refuge for victims of domestic violence and human trafficking, sparing them the difficult journey to shelters outside the county.
Collins presented a passionate plea to the board, detailing the urgent need for a local safe haven. Collins, who began her work as a victim’s advocate in McKenzie County in 2020, shared her long-held vision. “I knew there was a need for a shelter,” she explained, acknowledging that previous efforts stalled due to the extensive work required. However, she explained that with a dedicated new team, the dream is becoming a reality. “I took the role as the director this year and I got a good staff, good crew that wants to establish a shelter here in Watford. And I’ve been wanting to do this and now we have the opportunity. So we actually have purchased a house here in McKenzie County already.”
