Fargo will have a new mayor in July, and Democrats finally have the victory they have been starving for.
Josh Boschee, a 12-year Democratic legislator and House minority leader, entered the race in January and ran a disciplined campaign. He raised serious money, much of it from progressive and Democratic-aligned interests, and turned that money into what wins elections: voter contact, organization and turnout.
That matters because North Dakota Democrats have not had much to celebrate for a long time. Heidi Heitkamp was their last true statewide bright spot, and her one term in the U.S. Senate ended in 2018 with a double-digit loss to now Senator Kevin Cramer. Since the Ed Schafer era, Republicans rebuilt themselves into the dominant force in North Dakota politics. Cramer, John Hoeven, Drew Wrigley, Jack Dalrymple, more recently Kelly Armstrong and others built and kept a Republican supermajority culture. Today Republicans hold every statewide office and all three seats in the congressional delegation.
I often joke that North Dakota Democrats in the legislature could meet in a phone booth. That is not far from the political reality.
