Watford City’s boys track team capped off its 2010 season on a high note on Saturday as the Wolves took fourth place at the State Track and Field Meet in Bismarck with 51 points.
Leading the way for the Wolves’ boys team was the 800 meter relay team of Tyler Bates, Jason Shipman, Tyler Flatland and Adam Brenna which posted a State winning time of 1:31.89 and broke the W.C.H.S. school record of 1:31.94. The former record was set in 1988 by Bill Connolly, Doug Olson, Terry Moe and  Shane Homiston.
“We ended the year with a great State meet,” stated David Gumke, boys head coach. “In my 20 years of coaching track and field, I have never had a team qualify for finals in all of our events for the second day of the meet. The guys were all very focused and ready to compete.”
While the Wolves’ boys team only had one point with Curtis Lohse’s eighth place finish in the triple jump after Friday, the boys were poised to make a run for a top place finish on Saturday with Adam Brenna qualifying for the finals in the 200 and 400 meter dashes, Tyler Flatland in the 400 meter dash and the 300 meter hurdles, Jason Shipman in the 300 meter and 110 meter hurdles, and Tyler Bates in 400 meter dash.
Also poised to propel the boys team to one of its best finishes at State was the 400 meter relay team of Dillon Langerud, Jason Shipman, Josh Johnson and Tyler Bates; the 800 meter relay team of Tyler Bates, Jason Shipman, Tyler Flatland and Adam Brenna; and the 1,600 meter relay team of Tyler Bates, Curtis Lohse, Tyler Flatland and Adam Brenna.
And did the boys produce as Brenna took seventh in the 200 meter dash and fourth in the 400 meter dash, while Flatland set a new W.C.H.S. school record in the 300 meter hurdles with his third place finish with a time of 39.66. Jon Norstog set the former school record in 1986 with a time of 39.86.
Also racking up points individually for the Wolves on Saturday was Jason Shipman, who took sixth place in the 100 meter hurdles and eighth place in the 300 meter hurdles, and Tyler Bates with a sixth place finish in the 400 meter dash.
In the relays, Watford City’s 1,600 meter relay team of Tyler Bates, Curtis Lohse, Tyler Flatland and Adam Brenna took second place and the 400 meter relay team of Dillon Langerud, Jason Shipman, Josh Johnson and Tyler Bates took fifth place.
“The boys ran a lot of races during the two days counting prelims and finals and left nothing on the track,” stated Gumke. “They gave it everything that they had every time that they stepped on to the track or runway. I think that it is safe to say that we got everything out of the guys that we could at this meet, they had nothing left. There is not an individual that stands out above the rest, because they all were equally good and much needed in order to accomplish what they did. I am very proud of the guys for their effort all year. They made us coaches look good.”
New W.C.H.S. records set by this year’s boys team during the 2010 season include Tyler Flatland in the 300 meter hurdles, 400 meter dash and as a member of the 800 meter and 1,600 meter relay teams, Adam Brenna and Tyler Bates on the 800 and 1,600 meter relay teams, Jason Shipman on the 800 meter relay team and Curtis Lohse on the 1,600 meter relay team.
While at the State Track Meet, team awards were presented to the following male athletes - Most Valuable Performer, Tyler Flatland; Outstanding Field Event, Chans Brown and Curtis Lohse; Outstanding Runner, Adam Brenna; Coaches Choice, Jason Shipman; and Outstanding Track Teammate, Hayes Feilmeier.
“Thanks go out to coaches Greg Brown, Nancy Deutsch, Robin Schwartz, and Chuck Simpson for their good coaching throughout the year,” noted Gumke. “We have a very talented and experienced coaching staff.”
