Watford City opened its 2010-2011 boys basketball season on a strong note on Thursday evening as the Wolves rolled over the Heart River Cougars 83-54. But the Wolves were then upended by Minot Bishop Ryan 58-54 on Saturday evening.
This week, the Wolves will host New Town on Thursday in a battle between the top two teams in District 15 as well as in Region 8 before traveling to Ray on Dec. 10.
Watford City 83, Heart River 54
Four Watford City players hit double figures as the Wolves opened their season with an easy win over the Heart River Cougars last Thursday.
The Wolves used their speed and a strong defense to jump out to a quick 26-10 first-quarter lead and then never looked back as they cruised to the win.
Trey Jacobson had a triple double as he scored a game high 24 points while having 10 assists and 10 steals to pace the Wolves. Also scoring in double figures was Shawn Fulwider with 11 points, while Nick Liebel and Curtis Lohse ended the game with 10 points each.
The Wolves held a 43-23 halftime lead and then blew the game open in the third quarter outscoring the Cougars 21-10 to hold a 31-point, 64-33, advantage going into the final eight minutes of play.
Rounding out the scoring for Watford City was Tyler Flatland and Tyler Bates with eight points, Jason Shipman and Casey Bolman with four points each, while Ryan Monsen and Lucas Nicholson ended the game with two points each.

Bishop Ryan 58, Watford City 54
Watford City had no answer for Bishop Ryan’s hot hand from three-point land as the Wolves fell to the Lions 58-54 on Saturday.
The Titans drained 10 three-pointers as they battled back to edge the Wolves, who had led for most of the game.
Watford City led by 13 points early in the fourth quarter, but three back-to-back treys by the Lions got Bishop Ryan back into the game.
The Lions would take the lead 50-48 with 2:53 remaining in the game, but Shawn Fulwider would regain the lead for the Wolves on two back-to-back baskets with 1:50 remaining.
Bishop Ryan answered right back with a trey by Ben Magnuson to put the Lions up by one before Tyler Flatland cut the Lions’ lead to one point, 54-53 with 1:08 left on the clock.
The Lions answered right back with a basket of their own to put Bishop Ryan on top for good 55-54, with 58 seconds remaining in the game. The Lions sealed the win hitting three of four at the free-throw line in the last 30 seconds.
Tyler Flatland led the Wolves in scoring with 16 points, while Trey Jacobson and Curtis Lohse netted 10 points each.
Rounding out the scoring for Watford City was Nick Liebel with nine points, Shawn Fulwider with six points, Tyler Bates with two points and Jason Shipman with one point.
