Watford City’s varsity girls basketball team continued to rack up the wins as the Wolves upped their season record to 6-1 with victories over Killdeer and Ray this past week.
“We’re playing better,” states John Zenz, Wolves’ head coach. “But our shooting percentage, especially at the free-throw line, has got to get better.”
This week the Wolves will be at home against North Shore-Plaza on Thursday and will then play Stanley at Williston State at 7 p.m. on Saturday.

Watford City 68, Killdeer 54
While the outside temperature was finally above subzero in Watford City last Tuesday as the Wolves took on the Killdeer Cowboys, it was ice cold in the W.C.H.S. Gymnasium when it came to shooting.
It could have been a case of both teams being in too much of a hurry trying to score or trying to do too much with the basketball. But either way, the first two minutes of the game saw more turnovers and missed shots than there were baskets scored.
But when the two teams finally got settled down, it turned into a classic Wolves-Cowboy matchup with both teams battling to establish their offensive game.
The Cowboys led the Wolves, 10-9, at the end of the first quarter, but Watford City would begin pulling away in the second quarter. Watford City outscored Killdeer, 21-15, in the second stanza to post a 30-25 halftime lead, and then outgunned the Cowboys, 38-29, in the second half to pull off a 68-54 win.
With the win, the Wolves improved their season record to 5-1.
Three Watford City players scored in double figures with Ricki Lindley leading both teams in scoring with 20 points, while Katie Mogen and Amanda Mogen ended the game with 19 and 12 points, respectively.
Katie Mogen had a double-double in the game as she grabbed 11 rebounds to go along with her 19 points.
Also scoring for the Wolves was Kara Langerud and Elise Hadley with six points each, Alyssa Prichard with four points and Jeanna Zenz with one point.

Watford City 53, Ray 47
Watford City had three players score in double figures as the Wolves held off the Ray Jays, 53-47, on Saturday.
In a very close game, the Wolves held a slim, 10-8, lead over the Jays at the end of the first quarter of play, and led by three points, 31-28, at halftime.
The third quarter gave the Wolves some breathing room as Watford City went on a 13-3 scoring spree to take a 44-31 lead into the final eight minutes of play. But the Jays would battle back in the fourth quarter to cut into the Wolves’ lead as Watford City hung on to take the win.
Katie Mogen led the Wolves in scoring with 18 points, 14 rebounds and two blocked shots, while Ricki Lindley and Amanda Mogen would join her in double-figure scoring with 12 and 11 points, respectively.
Rounding out the scoring for Watford City was Jeanna Zenz with six points, while Kara Langerud, Lea Arndt and Elise Hadley netted two points each.
