Watford spikers win Beach Tourney

The Watford City varsity volleyball team capped off a busy week on a strong note on Saturday winning the Beach Tournament. Earlier in the week the Wolves split in action falling to Trinity Christian 3-2 and then bouncing back to defeat Trenton 3-1.
With a 21-7 overall record and a 7-4 dual record, the Wolves will be on the road this week when they travel to Dickinson Trinity on Oct. 15.
Trinity Christian 3, Watford City 2
Watford City got off to a good start against Trinity Christian in varsity volleyball action last Monday, the Wolves couldn’t keep the intensity up. After winning the first game, 25-18, the Wolves fell to the Crusaders, 25-23 and 26-24, in the next two games before coming back to take the fourth game, 25-23.
In the fifth and deciding game, the Crusaders edged the Wolves, 15-11.
“We lost our intensity and started playing their game,” stated Nancy Deutsch, Wolves’ head coach.
Amanda Mogen led the Wolves with four service aces, while McKayla Haugeberg had 10 kills and 28 digs. Tori Hopkins ended the match with 29 assists, while Katie Mogen had five blocks.

Watford City 3, Trenton 1
Watford City’s offense was definitely working on Thursday as the Wolves pounded in 19 service aces and 35 kills to defeat the Trenton Tigers, 3-1.
While Trenton won the first game, 26-24, the rest of the night belonged to the Wolves as Watford City took the next three games by scores of 25-14, 25-19 and 25-19.
“We started out slow, but we turned up the heat and won the next three game,” stated Deutsch. “As a team, we played hard.”
Taylor Dwyer had eight service aces in the game, while McKayla Haugeberg had eight kills. Tori Hopkins recorded 27 assists, while Jessica Brown ended the night with four  blocks.

Beach Tournament
Watford City breezed through pool play at the Beach Tournament on Saturday and then defeated Wibaux to emerge as tournament champions.
In pool play, the Wolves defeated Heart River, 20-17 ad 20-17, in opening round action and then split with Bowman losing the first game, 20-19, and then coming back to win the second game, 20-14. In their final pool play match, the Wolves rolled over Beach, 20-16 and 20-19.
Watford City took on Killdeer in the first round of tournament play with the Cowboys taking the first game, 25-20. But the Wolves rallied taking the second and third games by scores of 25-14 and 15-5.
“Killdeer came out strong in the first game,” stated Deutsch. “But Tori had some great sets in the final two games and we had a lot of great digs.”
The Wolves then advanced to the championship game against Wibaux with 25-19 and 25-15 wins over Richardton/Taylor.
“Wibaux has tall players who can hit the ball hard,” stated Deutsch on the Wolves 25-10 first-game loss. “But we made some adjustments and changed our attitude in the next two games.”
And those adjustments made the difference as Watford City came back to win the final two games, 25-15 and 15-6.
