Watford boys take second at Grenora Invitational

Watford City had to battle cold temperatures and high winds last Thursday at the Grenora Boys Invitational Golf Tournament last Thursday. But in spite of the poor golfing conditions, the Wolves took second place behind a strong Mohall-Lansford-Sherwood team.
“I was pleased overall that we placed second as a team considering we were golfing in temperatures in the 40s along with 30 mile per hour winds,” stated Scott Wisness, boys’ head coach. “But now we are going to have to shoot better if we are to stay in the top three of the region.”
MLS won the 14-team tournament with a score of 337, while Watford City came in second with a score of 350.
Mitchell Liebel had his best showing of the season as he led the Wolves in scoring with a sixth place finish individually carding an 18-hole score of 85.
Other Watford City scores were Colter Maki, 86; Alex Hansen, 89; Beau Heiser, 97; Charles Villanueva, 90; and Keegan Thompson, 103.
“We do have the advantage of having three important meets on our home course this year,” states Wisness. “We host the Watford City Invitational on May 1 and the Northwest Conference on May 8, both of which are regional qualifiers. And then we host the Regional Tournament on May 18.”
At a regional qualifying tournament, according to Wisness, individual golfers qualify for the state tournament if they shoot a 7-over-par score or better.
“Hopefully with nice weather, we can have some individuals qualify for State,” says Wisness.
