Junior Gold goes 3-0 in hockey action

Watford City’s Junior Gold hockey team skated to three wins this past weekend as the Oilers defeated the Williston JV team, Crosby and Fargo.
The Oilers opened the weekend on the road in Williston against the Coyote JV team. Sophomore goalie Kalden Heggen turned aside 21 shots, recording his first high school career shutout, in the 3-0 Oiler win.
Chris Larsen opened the scoring for the Oilers when he deflected a shot off the stick of Douglas Rolfson. Jayden Grotte then put the Oilers up 2-0 pounding home a shot over the sprawling Coyote netminder. Douglas Nordby and Brandon Taylor added assists. Reid Kinden added an insurance goal with 2:12 to play on a shot just inside the Coyote blue line for a 3-0 final.
On Saturday, the Oilers faced off against the Crosby Comets scoring a 9-2 win. Heggen turned aside 22 Crosby shots while the Oilers fired 67 shots on the Comet netminder.
Chris Larsen led the attack as he notched four goals. Sophomore Jayden Grotte chipped in three goals while single goals came off the sticks of Brandon Taylor and defenseman Austin Patten. Players adding assists were Taylor, four; and Reid Kinden, Austin Patten and Douglas Rolfson with two each.
On Sunday, the Fargo Flames Black were in town to take on the Oilers with Watford City coming out on top 6-4. Kalden Heggen turned aside 21 shots.
Junior Douglas Nordby led the offensive attack as he had three goals, while Chris Larsen, Reid Kinden and Brandon Taylor added one goal each. Picking up assists were Larsen, two; Kinden, two; and Jayden Grotte, Tanner Wold, Douglas Rolfson and Derek Thompson with one each.
The Oilers have an off weekend and will resume action in Crosby on Feb. 12 before hosting Rugby at 5 p.m. on Feb. 13 and Langdon at noon on Feb. 14.
