Girls softball heading to State Tournament

With a second place finish at the Northwest Region Softball Tournament, Watford City’s girls varsity softball team earned a trip to the State Class B Softball Tournament.
The Wolves, who are the No. 2 seed from the West Region, will take on Enderlin-Maple Valley in opening day action of the State Tournament, which gets underway on May 29 at the Minot South Hill Complex. The tournament concludes on Saturday, May 31.
In the regional tournament on Monday, May 19, the Wolves opened with a 12-3 win over Kenmare-Bowbells-Mohall-Lansford-Sherwood, and then fell to Westhope-Newburg-Bottineau, 14-13.
In second day action, Watford City downed Stanley, 6-5, to advance to the title game in a rematch against Westhope-Newburg-Bottineau.
In the region title game, Watford City never got their bats going as the Wolves fell to Westhope-Newburg-Bottineau, 13-0, in five innings.

Watford City scored 12 runs on 20 hits as the Wolves breezed to a 12-3 win over Kenmare-Bowbells-Mohall-Lansford-Sherwood in opening round play of the
West Region Girls Softball Tournament on Monday in Minot.
The Wolves held a 6-1 lead after two innings, and then continued to score throughout the game en route to the easy win.
Kara Langerud went four of four at the plate with three RBIs, while Tarynn Jacobson was three for three and had three RBIs,
“We really came out strong against KBMLS,” stated Devin Langerud, Wolves’ head coach. “It was a great way to start the tournament.”
Tori Hopkins earned the win on the mound for the Wolves as she gave up six hits and struck out two batters.

While Watford City would take an early, 4-1 lead, against Westhope-Newburg-Bottineau after three innings of play, the Wolves would give up eight runs in the top of the fourth inning to let the Sioux back into the game.
The two teams would battle for the remainder of the game with WNB scoring the winning run in the eighth inning.
“We played the Sioux tough, but were never able to get over the hump and get the win,” stated Langerud.

Watford City 6, Stanley 5
After two scoreless innings, Watford City got on the scoreboard first against Stanley in the semifinals of the West Region Tournament on Tuesday.
Watford City would lead Stanley, 5-2, after four innings of play, but the Blue Jays would answer with three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to deadlock the game at 5-5. The Wolves would then go ahead, 6-5, in the top of the sixth when Tarynn Jacobson scored on a Kamryn Grimes’ hit. Watford City’s defense then shut out Stanley in the bottom of the inning to take the win.

Westhope-Newburg-Bottineau definitely had Watford City’s number in the West Region Girls Softball Tournament in Minot.
After edging the Wolves, 14-13, in opening day action of the tournament, the Sioux came back to shut out Watford City, 13-0, in the title game.
“We would have had to beat them twice in order to win the region title,” stated Langerud. “But we came out tired and wore out after our earlier tournament games and lost, 13-0, in five innnings.”
